“Peacemaker is a global movement built up by young people from different countries, cultures and regions who fight for global justice and peace.”
Peacemaker journalism is one of the important elements within the peacemaker programme. Introduction to this novel topic was presented in the zoom discussion organized by the Born to Win Relationships together with YMCA of Pamunugama on 17 September, 2021.
18 interested individuals including journalists and social activists attended the event which lasted for two hours.
Mr. Fredrik Glad-Gjerns the Director of Y Global of Norway introduced the concept. He has been giving leadership to the Peacemaker movements from its birth.
During his sharing Mr. Fredrik said; “Information plays a vital role in peace making and fighting for justice. Peacemaker journalism goes beyond reporting incidents. It is about reporting injustice and exploitations from the perspective of victims” He further said that “Peacemaker journalism is a real activism. It works for justice and make peace”
Mr. Evan Rubara, a journalist from Tanzania shared his experiences on peacemaker journalism specially around the exploitations by multinational mining companies in Tanzania. Mr, Evan also mentioned on the important ground rules that journalists should follow when engaging in the peacemaker journalism such as authenticity of the information.
Mr. Dileepa Wanniarchchi, CEO of Born To Win Relationships moderated the meeting. It was mentioned that YMCA of Pamunugama and Born to Win Relationships will be exploring the concept and building-up a network for peacemaker journalist activities with other social movements and concerned individuals.
